Eyeline match (def.)

Eyeline match is a film editing technique to indicate to the audience what a character is seeing. It arises from the idea that when a cut is made, what the audience sees next is what the character in the previous shot is looking at. Its use is vital and a key to coherent cinematic editing. Eyeline matching comprises emotion, pacing, space, form, staging, composition, and sometimes juxtaposition or a time-jump all within a single cut.
